UNBS intensifies standards enforcement

In line with its mandate of enforcing standards to protect the health and safety of consumers and the environment against dangerous and sub-standard products, the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) surveillance team has carried out numerous operations across the country;

1,584 litres of Zicoffee Mombasa Premium gin packed in 100mls, contrary to the Ministry of Trade Industry and cooperatives directive, was seized in Kakumiro

Rashid’s bakery and GM bakery in Mbale was sealed off for baking bread in poor hygiene conditions contrary to the Uganda Standard, US 28/EAS 39:2002; Code of practice for Hygiene in Food and Drink Manufacturing Industry

Truck distributing substandard mattresses from Com Foam mattresses was intercepted in Mubende

Bam shopping centre in Mbale was found selling sub-standard electrical extensions and cosmetics containing hydroquinone; items seized.

Factory producing Muhumuza Energy drink was sealed off for operating under poor hygiene conditions contrary to the Uganda Standard, US 28/EAS 39:2002; Code of practice for Hygiene in Food and Drink Manufacturing Industry. The factory was also selling uncertified drinks contrary to the ‘Use of UNBS Distinctive Mark Regulation, 2018’ which states that all products covered by mandatory standards must be certified by UNBS and issued with a Distinctive Mark before they are allowed on the market.

The surveillance team is to continue with such operations to different parts of the country.
