THE NEW VISION – Govt warns beverages, food manufacturers against deceptive adverts. The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has warned beverages and drugs manufacturers against placing misleading adverts in the media and selling uncertified products. The standards regulator said it had noticed with concern a growing number of advertisements of products claiming nutritional and therapeutic value on television, radio and social media, while they are not certified. The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), National Drug Authority (NDA), and Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) have asked members of the public to report manufacturers and media houses advertising various drinks which claim to enhance human potency. CHIMPREPORTS – Health Beverages, Drug Manufacturers to be approved by NDA before getting UNBS clearance. Manufacturers of beverages claiming to contain nutritional and therapeutic value said to cure, treat, prevent diseases or modify the body function will be required to acquire verification and approval from the Nationsl Drug Authority (NDA) before they are cleared by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), Patricia Bageine Ejalu, UNBS Deputy Executive Director has said. The three agencies have separately come under fire for alleged failure to perform their roles, which has abetted the misinformation. After putting a stamp on approved industrial products in the market, Uganda National Bureau of Standards now wants the stamp on courses offered in universities in the country. The acting executive director Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) David Livingstone Ebiru is calling for a partnership with the National Council for Higher Education to develop modules on standardization for courses in Universities. THE NEW VISION – All temperature guns must be calibrated- UNBS. The Uganda National Bureau of Standards has instructed all users of the Non-Contact Infrared Thermometers (NCITs), commonly known as temperature guns, to have them calibrated and verified by the regulator, before use. According to UNBS, calibration is simply a process of validating the temperature gun against the temperature source, a master laboratory thermometer, to ensure that its measurements are accurate.
